Please join the Runnymede Society\u2019s McGill Chapter for a captivating lecture on the history and contemporary importance of the right to security against unreasonable searches and seizures with Attorney Josh Dehaas (Canadian Constitution Foundation) on Tuesday, November 18th!<\/span><\/p>\n

Mr. Dehaas will trace the origins of Section 8 of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms through English common law and cover landmark Canadian cases such as <\/span>Hunter v. Southam<\/span><\/i> [1984], <\/span>Wong<\/span><\/i> [1990], and <\/span>Duarte<\/span><\/i> [1990]. He will argue that while technology and government powers have evolved, the principle of a protected private sphere remains essential. From the freezing of bank accounts under the Emergencies Act to new surveillance tools, warrantless data demands, and advances in facial recognition, Mr. Dehaas will explore why Section 8\u2019s guarantees are more important than ever in the digital age.<\/span><\/p>\n
