Join the Runnymede Society for some lively debate and discussion about the most important issues in Canadian constitutional law today \u2014 and how they impact freedom, policy, and society.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Until December 1<sup>st<\/sup>, 2017, the code EARLYBIRD will entitle you to a 50% discount on registration.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Hon. Peter Lauwers<\/strong>\u00a0of the Court of Appeal for Ontario will deliver the keynote address to kick off the Runnymede Society Law &amp; Freedom Conference on Friday, January 12, 2018 at 6:00pm at Hart House, University of Toronto.<\/p>\n<p>Justice Lauwers&#8217; talk is titled \u201cThe Mischief of &#8216;Charter Values&#8217;\u201d in constitutional interpretation. The keynote address will be followed by a cocktail reception.<\/p>\n<p>The rest of the conference will take place on Saturday, January 13, 2018, with five\u00a0outstanding panels and debates featuring leading Canadian scholars, judges, and practitioners. Topics and participants include a:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Debate on the Law Society of Upper Canada\u2019s new mandatory Statement of Principles featuring\u00a0<strong>Marni Soupcoff\u00a0<\/strong>(writer, lawyer, policy analyst),\u00a0<strong>Bruce Pardy<\/strong>\u00a0(Queen&#8217;s University Faculty of Law),\u00a0<strong>Adam Goldenberg<\/strong>\u00a0(McCarthy T\u00e9trault), and Renatta Austin (Renatta Austin Law);<\/li>\n<li>New paper by professor and Double Aspect-blogger\u00a0<strong>Leonid Sirota<\/strong>, with a conversation to follow with\u00a0<strong>The Hon. Brad Miller\u00a0<\/strong>of the Court of Appeal for Ontario;<\/li>\n<li>Panel on the state of stare decisis in Canadian law featuring\u00a0<strong>Michael Bookman\u00a0<\/strong>(Norton Rose Fulbright) and Professors\u00a0<strong>Brian Bird<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Dwight Newman<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li>Discussion of what is going on with the duty to consult in Aboriginal Law featuring Professors\u00a0<strong>Maxime St-Hilaire\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Malcolm Lavoie;<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Lunchtime Talk with <strong>Scott Reid<\/strong> (Member of Parliament) and Professor <strong>Steven Calabresi<\/strong> (Northwestern Pritzker School of Law).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The conference will conclude with a dinner at Hart House, featuring celebrated free speech advocate, Flemming Rose, former editor of Danish newspaper <em>Jyllands Posten<\/em> and publisher of the infamous 2005 \u201cMuhammad cartoons\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The schedule can be downloaded and viewed\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/theccf.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/schedule2018.pdf\"><strong>here<\/strong><\/a><strong>.
