Job Posting: National Director

The Runnymede Society, a project of the Canadian Constitution Foundation, is looking for a National Director. The National Director reports directly to the Executive Director of the CCF and is responsible for overseeing all of Runnymede’s programs and operations, including:

  • Overseeing Runnymede’s student chapter program at 18+ law schools and universities across Canada; assisting students with planning events by coordinating speaker invitations and suggesting timely topics
  • Planning and executing Runnymede’s annual Law & Freedom national conference by scheduling panels and coordinating speakers
  • Promoting original legal research on the topics of constitutionalism, fundamental freedoms and the rule of law, including the planning of Runnymede’s annual academic symposium and volume
  • Serving as Managing Editor of Runnymede’s annual journal, the Dicey Law Review, which is set to be co-published with LexisNexis and Advocates for the Rule of Law as two virtual issues (subsequently compiled in one print volume) beginning in 2025
  • Overseeing Runnymede’s lawyer chapter program in eight major cities across Canada (i.e., Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, and St. John’s)
  • Producing and hosting the Runnymede Radio podcast, including soliciting guests for interviews on timely subjects
  • Updating and expanding Runnymede’s virtual archive of past event recordings, to be available exclusively for members on forthcoming online portal
  • Fostering strategic partnerships with like-minded lawyers, scholars, and organizations
  • Expanding Runnymede’s network of dues-paying members and stakeholders
  • Reporting to Runnymede’s donors on a regular basis as to our activities, and pursuing leads for new grants and funding opportunities

The above responsibilities will be executed through a combination of the National Director’s direct initiative and by delegating and overseeing the completion of these tasks to student/lawyer volunteers and staff members, including Runnymede’s full-time Operations and Communications Director and part-time Scholar-in-Residence.

The ideal applicant will have at least an undergraduate law degree (i.e., JD or LLB) and 1-3 years’ experience in legal practice or academia, although this is not a firm requirement. Strong oral and written communication skills, self-motivation, original thinking, and awareness of and commitment to Runnymede’s core values of constitutionalism, fundamental freedoms, and the rule of law are essential.

Compensation is competitive and based on the candidate’s level of experience, with an opportunity to receive an additional bonus upon the completion of key performance objectives. The job will involve regular travel, mostly within Canada. The position’s start date is flexible, though the successful candidate will ideally begin their duties (either part-time or full-time) between May and July 2024.

Interested applicants should send their CV and cover letter to Kristopher Kinsinger (kkinsinger@runnymedesociety.ca) and Joanna Baron (jbaron@theccf.ca); letters of reference are not required but are encouraged. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until the position has been filled.
