The Declaratory Judgment: Its Availability and Its Limitations

Please join us for a free talk by Professor Gerard Kennedy that will explore the “declaratory judgment”—i.e., a judgment that does not give parties any remedies beyond a declaration regarding a legal state of affairs—at the Alt Hotel in St. John’s, NL on Friday, November 14th, 2025, from 12:00–1:00 PM (NDT). This event is presented by the Runnymede Society’s St. John’s Lawyer Chapter. 

Professor Kennedy will discuss the purposes of a declaratory judgment and the circumstances in which this remedy may be granted, as well as its advantages and limitations. Gerard Kennedy is an Associate Professor at the University of Alberta Faculty of Law. He earned his JD from Queen’s University, where he received the Dean’s Key, and went on to complete an LLM at Harvard Law School as a Frank Knox Memorial Fellow. He later earned his doctorate at Osgoode Hall Law School, supported by a Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Scholarship and a SSHRC doctoral award, with visiting research positions at NYU School of Law and the Max Planck Institute Luxembourg.
